Vitamin D injection
Why Vitamin D is important?
Vitamin D is vital for hormonal balance, musculoskeletal, particularly bones, teeth health.
Although Vitamin D is produced by skin sun, we often see patients with Vitamin D deficiencies here in Australia.
What Vitamin D deficiency is linked to?
- Osteoporosis (weak bones)
- Low immune system (recurrent infections, colds, herpes, thrush etc)
- Dementia and Alzheimer’
- Mental health (depression, anxiety, poor sleep)
- Thyroid problems
- Certain cancers
Research demonstrated Vitamin D is more beneficial via injection rather than oral capsules. Most likely, because depo of the vitamin can be used as needed (not when available). Also, injection bypasses malabsorption problems and holds stable level.
How often Vitamin D injections needed?
Doctor will determine your individual need, but research demonstrated Vitamin D injections every 6 months to 1 year beneficial for most patients.
Is it painful?
The injection is almost painless, quick and safe in experienced hands.
Are there any contraindications?
Like any other prescription only medicine, Vitamin D injection needs to be done by trained medical practitioner.
Examples of contraindications include some heart conditions, calcium and magnesium abnormalities, hyperparathyroidism, particular renal diseases and also few medications.
Usually well tolerated and has a wide therapeutic safety, like most of nutritional medications, if administered by trained medical practitioner.
However, there are described cases of Vitamin D induced increased calcium in blood and it’s potential complications.
